There will be no repeat for the Tom Shypitka rink.

Ken McHargue did the unthinkable, defeating the defending Kootenay Champs two straight games en route to the Senior Men’s Zone Curling Championships Sunday at the Nelson Curling Club.

McHargue, third Gerry Kent, second Grant Klapp and lead Bruce Young outlasted Shypitka & Company 7-5 in the A-B final to secure a trip to Vancouver Island in Feburary.

McHargue defeated Shypitka 9-6 in the B final Sunday morning.

With the game tied 5-5 entering the 10th end, McHargue put the pressure on the Cranbrook skip with a couple of rocks in scoring position.

Despite facing a pair of counting rocks, Shypitka still had a chance to steal the win if the Cranbrook skip could bury his final stone.

However, Shypitka came up light with his final attempt allowing the Elkford skip to grab two to win the game.

McHargue lost Saturday afternoon to Shypitka 8-7 in the A final.

However, the East Kootenay rink blasted Nando Salviulo of Nelson 9-1 in the B semi Saturday to advance against Shypitka.

Salviulo, with Bud Edgar, Gary Meadows and Don Harasym anchoring the team, finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.

Rob Ferguson of Trail and Myron Nichol of Castlegar were 1-2.

Shypitka of Cranbrook, with Nelson third Fred Thomson, second Don Freschi of Trail and Bill King of Fruitvale on the team, lost in 2013 in the Senior’s Final held in Trail.

The B.C. Senior Championships are set for February 17-23 in Comox Valley.
