Rossland Figure Skater’s West Kootenay Invitational Competition!
It’s time for the Rossland Figure Skating Club to sharpen their skates in time to host the West Kootenay Invitational Figure Skating Competition this January 17 to 19th. With this being one of the prime times to visit Rossland, it’s sure to attract visitors from the Kootenays and beyond. Over 100 skaters are expected to attend this competition, with 198 entries registered in many different disciplines throughout the weekend.
Clubs and coaches will be represented from as close to home as Rossland, Beaver Valley, Castlegar, Nelson, and Grand Forks. Those that are venturing from afar will be North Star (Kimberley), Cranbrook, Fernie, Sparwood, Columbia Valley, Revelstoke, Armstrong / Enderby and Summerland areas. All of these clubs will join together in the winter wonderland of Rossland to cheer on their fellow skaters.
The RFSC has been organizing and working hard to bring this event to together. The event is open to the public, so please come out and enjoy the grace and beauty that will be on display on the ice over the 3 days. Entry level is between Star 1 through Juvenile free skate. Ages vary as do the skating ability. Friday is a High test day, where skaters will be judges by officials on their ability to perform many different levels of dance and skills; this will run from 10:30 am to 5:30pm. Saturday and Sunday will include events such as Elements, creative Free Skate Solos, technical interpretive programs and much more. Come out the Arena this weekend to cheer on the skaters!
Hip Hop & Jazz
The Hip Hop classes start the fourth week of January, with classes for children from 3 years to teens! Classes will run in the Miners Hall on Tuesdays. These fun, high energy choreography based classes start with a fast paced warm-up and then dancers get down with the latest in contemporary hip-hop moves. The pace is fast and the energy is high! Drop in’s will only be permitted if the class achieves a minimum of 8 registered participants.
Joe Hill Coffee House
Rossland’s showcase for talent from throughout the region has another great event lined up for Sunday, January 19. Performers for the night include: Nicole Zimmers’ piano students; Nicole Zimmer herself; A one act play presented by the Columbia Phoenix Players, staring Shaelian Bennet and Joseph French; Justin Tydeman a master guitarist and composer from the Slocan Valley; Ben Kolff showcasing Modern Jive; Marti Daniel playing and singing with soul and the Foggy Goggle Boys singing great songs with great harmonies and rhythms.
The Joe Hill Coffee House has round tables, soft chairs, coffee and tea, excellent goodies, great sound and a friendly atmosphere. Kids and students are free – adults are $3.00. The Joe Hill Coffee House is located in the Rossland Miners Hall, 1765 Columbia Ave. Doors open at 6:00pm and the show starts at 7:00pm sharp.
Public Skating Schedule for the week of January 13-19, 2014
Public Skating this week is on Wednesday January 15 from 6:30-7:45pm and on Sunday, January 19 from 6:00-7:30pm. The Sunday, 2:30pm Public Skate has cancelled due to the Figure Skating Competition. The Rossland Youth Action Network
The Rossland Youth Action Network’s aim is to “increase activities for youth in the community and support opportunities and services for youth aged 12 -18 years old.” This goal has been made possible by the Columbia Basin Trust, who support the Network with their Community Directed Youth Funds.

Rossland Youth Action Network Logo Contest

Rossland Public Library

Carnival are some of the great programs running in January. On Sunday, February 9 there’s a Wet Felting workshop
with Tricia Rasku that will have participants making a scarf.
Rossland Seniors
The Rossland Seniors Hall has lots of great activities running through the week! On Mondays at 1:30pm the Rossland Seniors Art Club meets. Contact Edith Harasin at 250-362-5477 for more information. On Monday evenings, the Rossland Quilters Guild gets together at 7:00pm. Contact Deyanne Davies at 250-362-7727 for more information. On Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm the Rossland Golden City Old Time Fiddlers practice and play. The public are welcome to sit in and listen to the old time fiddlers play their music. Visitors should contact Richie Mann before going to the Hall. Contact Richie or Audrey at 250-362-9465. On Thursdays between 9:30-11:00am join the Seniors for stretching exercises and morning tea and snacks.
