Rossland Youth Action Network

Rossland has a new Youth Coordinator who’s putting together some awesome fun for the community’s kids!  Check out the upcoming activities and events planned for the next few weeks. 

 

Rossland Youth Action Network Logo Contest

Design our logo! The winning logo will be included on all our posters, event pages, etc.  This could be your 15

minutes of fame!!    Winning logo designer will win a $100 gift certificate to a Rossland Business of your choice. 

There will be runner up prizes as well.

 

Youth Action Network – Painting with Stephanie Gauvin
The second in our local artist series, youth artists can come and learn painting techniques from popular local artist

Co-ops 101

The Upper Columbia Co-op Council and the Basin Business Advisors’ Program are holding a Co-ops 101 free

luncheon session on Thursday, December 12 from 10:00am-12:30pm in the Rossland Art Gallery.  Co-op

businesses creatively generate employment while enhancing economic and community development in the area. 

The co-op model is versatile and can adapt to virtually any business idea.  Pre-registration is required for this event.

 Blackjack hosts the Haywood Noram’s this weekend! 

On  December 14-15 2013 watch some of the best racers in North America compete at Black Jack Cross Country

 ski trails as part of the Haywood Nor Am and Buff Sprint series! This event is also part of the Canadian World Jr

and U23 Championship Team Trials. The races for this weekend are a free technique sprint and a classic technique

distance race. Also on this weekend will be the Teck Kootenay Cup #1 & #2 races.  First race at 9:00am both days,

more detailed schedule in race notice.

 

Joe Hill Coffee House Lights up December! 

On December 15, Joe Hill Coffee House, Rossland’s community showcase for talent from throughout the West Kootenays, will present another great show.   Performers for the evening are:  Michael Gifford, founder of Joe Hill Coffee House, performing songs from “Lonesome Valley,” a country operetta written by Michael’s father in 1950.

Young dancers from Kootenay Dance Works – Ali Ferguson dancing “Dream Catcher,” Hollie Arsenault dancing Fields of Gold,” and Bethaney Johnson dancing “Ave Maria.  The No Frets Orchestra, an eclectic collection of Rossland’s most enthusiastic fiddlers young and old, backed by friends on various instruments, performing a set of toe-tapping orchestral pieces.   The Rossland Glee Club, presenting “Tribute to Snow,” followed by a traditional French carol, and finishing with a Gospel Christmas piece that, in their words, will “blow the doors down!”  Andrew and John Cullen, a father and son duo performing fiery Mediterranean Flamenco guitar, featuring the music of Rodrigo y Gabriela, Pavlo, and original compositions.  Stevie B, a perennial Rossland favorite, singing and strumming a la Steve.  Green Avenue – Aaron Andrews singing and playing guitar, Paul Dasti on bass, and Chris Leslie, an award-winning fiddler newly arrived from Nova Scotia.  Canadian country at its finest! 

Joe Hill Coffee House has goodies by the Gold Fever Follies, soft seats and round tables, and a relaxing family-friendly atmosphere.  Admission is a mere $3 – kids and students free.  Joe Hill Coffee House takes place in the Rossland Miners’ Hall, 1765 Columbia Avenue in Rossland.  Doors open at 6:00 PM.  The show starts at 7:00.  (Because of the size of our show, we would like to ask that people arrive early enough that we can start at 7:00 sharp.)  For more information, you can contact Les Carter, 250-362-5677, retrac01@telus.net.

Public Skating Schedule for the week of December 9-15 , 2013

Public Skating in the Rossland Arena is on Wednesday December 11 from 6:30-7:45pm and Sunday December 15 from 2:30-4:00pm and again from 6:00-7:30pm.  For more information about admission prices, skate rentals and more, please log onto the City’s website, at www.rossland.ca , then Arena page. 

Rossland Seniors

The Rossland Seniors Hall has lots of great activities running through the week!  On Mondays at 1:30pm the Rossland Seniors Art Club meets.  Contact Edith Harasin at 250-362-5477 for more information.   On Monday evenings, the Rossland Quilters Guild gets together at 7:00pm.  Contact Deyanne Davies at 250-362-7727 for more information.   On Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm the Rossland Golden City Old Time Fiddlers practice and play.  The public are welcome to sit in and listen to the old time fiddlers play their music.  Visitors should contact Richie Mann before going to the Hall.  Contact Richie or Audrey at 250-362-9465.  On Thursdays between 9:30-11:00am join the Seniors for stretching exercises and morning tea and snacks.   

Rossland Public Library

Check out the Library’s website for a complete listing of the programs they’re running.  From Storytime for toddlers to Teen Movie night, the Library has some excellent opportunities to connect with others and to further a love of literacy.
