Harrop, Proctor residents face delays as Western Pacific Marine performs annual ferry maintenance

Anyone wishing to take a drive to view the autumn colours in Harrop or Proctor had better a lot for a little extra time.
Western Pacific Marine group has commenced annual maintenance to the Harrop ferry, which has caused long delays to residents using the cable ferry.
The ferry, connecting the rural communities of Harrop and Procter to Highway 3A, will be out of service for maintenance from October 15-30.
During the down time a pontoon barge is in service to replace the Harrop ferry, which has caused delays of up to two hours for the usual five minute ride across the West Arm of Kootenay Lake.
The maintenance is necessary to upgrade the drive system and rebuild the apron hinges.
“As vehicle capacity is limited and the barge will be operating at a slower speeds, expect delays,” said a release on the Western Pacific Marine website.
“ Car pooling and public transportation are encouraged for this duration.”
During ship maintenance, a weight restriction of 35,000 kg and a maximum length of 64 feet will be in place.
“We are making every effort to contact transport companies to notify them of this weight restriction,” the release added.
