The lead up to the Thanksgiving holiday weekend kept Nelson Police staff busy as officers responded to more than 50 calls during the past few days.

Friday (October 11) afternoon a female driver in the 1000 Block of Josephine Street noticed an assault taking place.

At approximately 3:45 p.m., the driver saw a young male chase a female down the street before first tripping and then kicking the victim.

The female begged the driver not to report the incident to police.

However, believing the woman’s life was in danger, the incident was reported.

Nelson Police is continuing the investigation and asking anyone else who may have witnessed the incident to  contact 250-354-3919.

Police not only deal with impaired driver but unruly passengers

Early Saturday (October 12) morning at around 3:50 a.m., officers pulled over a vehicle in the 500 block of Vernon Street.

The driver exited with car and, to officers, was obviously under the influence of alcohol.

However, during the breathalyzer test, passengers from the car repeatedly interrupted the Constables with questions and sarcastic comments despite numerous warnings to stop interfering.

Eventually they complied so the members could focus on the matter at hand.

The driver was suspended for 90 days under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Police want to reminded the public that although there is no issue with watching police members conduct their investigations, people must keep a proper distance and in no way obstruct them from doing their job.

It is a criminal offence to do so under section 129 of the Criminal Code and if found guilty an offender and if found guilty an offender can be sentenced to up to two years in jail.

The man arrived at 4:15 a.m.

A description of the offender was given and NPD members quickly located the suspect, still at the same location.

The man was taken into custody and lodged into cells and will appear in court  Tuesday (October 15) to answer to charges of assault with a weapon, uttering threats and carrying a weapon dangerous to the public.

Man punched and kicked on Victoria Street

On Thursday (October 10) at around 2:30 p.m., a person yelling a screaming approached by a man in the 300 Block of Victoria Street.

Before the victim had a chance to respond the male punched and kicked him repeatedly.

A witness to the assault intervened and the man fled the scene.

NPD officers responded, and after the assailant was identified to a person known to police, he was apprehended a short time later.

The assailant was  lodged into NPD cells and will appear in court Tuesday answer to charges of assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats and others.

The victim’s injuries were serious but non-life threatening.

Man arrested for public intoxication

On Wednesday (October 9) at 5:20 p.m. the officers found an inebriated man sitting on the sidewalk in the 500 Block of Ward Street.

The man was arrested for public intoxication and transported to NPD cells as he was unable to care for himself.

It was later discovered that the 60-year-old local man had conditions from a previous incident to abstain from consuming alcohol and was charged for that breach of his conditions.

The man was later released when sober enough to care for himself.
