Outhouse races dug up as time capsule buried...it's shaping up to be a spectacular Golden City Days this year
The Rossland Golden City Days Committee is excited to bring you a weekend of fun and entertainment on September 6th – 8th, celebrating our traditional heritage festival, and we sure hope you’re planning to join us!
Many activities and lots of fun are in store for you and your family. To kick off the weekend events, the Time Capsule Project Sealing Ceremony will be taking place on the front lawn of the Rossland Library on Friday.
At 7:00, at the Miners’ Hall, you will be treated to an evening of fantastic live music at the Evening of Entertainment EXTRAVAGANZA! Local talent such as Norm Worsfold, Tim Bourchier, Grant Mara’s Wishes, Don Birtch, Dawn Graham, Les Carter, Kyla Hanna, and Kootenay Jack will be taking to the stage. Nelson’s hot Balkan 5 piece brass band, Oxygen Orkestar, will close out the evening. And, of course, an evening of music wouldn’t be complete without the Golden City Fiddlers, who will be opening the evening with some pre-show foot-stomping fiddle music! The annual pancake breakfast will be held at the Rossland Firehall on Saturday morning. Don’t forget to visit the Fall Fair after the parade on Saturday and enjoy browsing the many items entered by Rossland residents, as well as, check out the many vendors, informative displays, live entertainment, and concession area. The Petting Zoo will be outside on Spokane St.
From the parade Saturday morning to the NDCU-sponsored inflatable fun park in the Rossland Arena parking lot, you and your children will be busy all day. The parade will loop around Jubilee Park, down St. Paul St., across 2nd Avenue, and end at Nickleplate Park. The craft vendors and food booths, featuring burgers, sausages, pulled pork, wraps, fries, kettle corn, baked goods, and cold drinks, will be located in the arena parking lot. Mountain FM and EZ Rock will be on hand to provide music, goodies, and treats! Rounding out the food selection, the infamous baron of beef will be served by the Rossland Legion Ladies Auxiliary in the lower Legion Hall.
Saturday afternoon’s Sour Dough Alley Stage entertainment includes the Trail Pipe Band, Golden City Fiddlers, Les Carter, Kootenay Jack, and the well-known band, No Excuse, featuring Karli Harrison. The afternoon’s entertainment will finish with a set from Paul Dasti’s trio, No Fine Print – just in time to watch the Outhouse Races.
The Outhouse Races will feature teams who will push, pull, and run around their home-built contraption to the finish line. Gather at the edge of the arena parking lot near 2nd Avenue to witness the revival of this old-time traditional contest! Cheer on your favorite team and watch to see who wins the coveted outhouse trophy!
The Slo-pitch Tournament will run all weekend at various Rossland ballparks. Look for posters with information about the Huck en Berries Jump Jam and Dreadhead Enduro DH race on Saturday. In the former Emcon lot, skateboarders will gather to take part in the KSS Miner Threat Jam, and young bikers will enjoy the games, bike-decorating, and fun races hosted by BettyGoHard. Continuing with the sports activities, check out The Golden City Grind on Sunday.
Sunday’s activities on the MacLean School grounds feature a Mini Bocce Tournament, community White Elephant Sale, Stake Your Claim children’s “dig for gold” event, burgers, hot dogs, and music by the Rossland Radio Co-op. Form your bocce teams, sell the items you no longer need, watch your children dig for the prized “gold”, bring your lawn chairs, and enjoy this social afternoon with family and friends. Closing out the weekend, you won’t want to miss the 4th Annual Mountain Mayhem West Kootenay Roller Derby Championships, Check out their poster for details.
Raffle tickets are on sale at Rossland Grocery and Powderhound. Your support of the Golden City Days raffle could win you a pair of Motorhead skis from Powderhound, a chainsaw-carved bench by Mike Williams (on display at Powderhound), a beautiful Avon product-filled gift basket, a one-night stay at the Flying Steamshovel, Red Mountain Resort one day lift ticket, or one of many other wonderful prizes, donated by our awesome and hugely supportive Rossland businesses!
