Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) accepted a contract with the BC Commissionaires at their July 25 meeting.

The Commissionaires will accept the position as animal control officers for one year starting Sept. 1 for a fee of  $8,600 a month plus an initial $1,500. They will cover animal control issues in Grand Forks, Christina Lake, Greenwood and RDKB Area “D.”

The changes came after the previous animal control officers — Boundary Animal Control — cancelled their existing contract in late May. This has left the region without an animal control officer until RDKB directors could find a replacement.

A new animal control bylaw has not yet been passed but is still in the works, according to Theresa Lenardon, an executive assistant with the RDKB. The bylaw may take another month or two and then it needs to be passed by the board of directors.

The RDKB remains the contact for all animal control issues, but will direct some emergency situations to the Commissionaires. On Sept.1, they will take over all animal control issues.
