Despite the heat wave blasting through the region, there is a chance of severe thunderstorms later this evening with a threat of large hail, damaging winds up to 90 km/hour and intense lightning – according the Environment Canada website.

It may seem unusual, but thunderstorms often follow heat waves, according to Environment Canada meteorologist Eric Mak.

Environment Canada made the announcement on their website earlier today. The warning is for the entire Interior, however, Mak said that it could miss the Kootenay-Boundary region.

“I’m not seeing too much on the radar right now,” he said.

If the storm does pass through this way it will be later this evening and could be accompanied by hail, regardless of the fact that the calendar says it’s July.

“Whenever there is a strong updraft … a severe thunderstorm, there is a chance of hail,” said Mak.

Even with the thunderstorm warning, it is still expected to be hot the rest of the week with temperatures hovering around 30 in the seven-day forecast.
