Bears, liquor store thieves and bumper cars keep NPD officers busy

Bears,liquor stores heists and bumper cars bouncing off buildings were just some of the 75-plus calls Nelson Police Department officers responded to during the weekend.
Driver plays bumper cars with building
In the early hours of Saturday (June 8) morning staff at a local drinking establishment saw a vehicle strike the corner of the building in the 300 block of Ward Street.
The driver never stopped to assess the damage. However, a police cruiser was nearby, stopping the vehicle before the driver could vacate the scene.
The driver failed a roadside screening test and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition.
Fight night in Nelson
Nelson Police members were called to several disturbances and fights soon after bar closing through the weekend.
During one call two males were arrested for being intoxicated in a public place.
Shoplifter caught stealing from local liquor store
Friday (June 7) afternoon at about 5 p.m. staff at a local liquor store contact police with the report of a customer stealing from the business.
The male, known to police, had left with a concealed a bottle of liquor.
The 28-year-old male has been issued a court date to face theft charges.
Same liquor store, different crime
Friday (June 7), approximately an hour after the shoplifting theft, the same liquor store contacted police to report a fraud.
Police did not reveal details, but a 19-year-old female was apprehended and was issued a court date to face fraud charges.
Bear calls a common occurrence for NPD staff
The summer season has not yet arrived but police continue to be extremely busy in relation to bear related calls.
Sunday (June 9) a bear was observed in the area around the south side of the Nelson Bridge.
The bear was described as young and unhealthy looking and had been spotted on numerous occasions.
Monday, NPD was contacted regarding a bear sighting at Rosemont Elementary School.
However, the animal was not located by police.
