Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for the West Kootenay Tuesday but it’s the wind surfacing during the evening that may have caused the most damage to property in the region.

Tuesday at approximately 6:49 p.m. a wind gust dropped a tree onto a house in the Shoreacres, a few kilometers west of the Highway 3A/6 junction.

In Taghum, 10 kilometers west of Nelson, a portable garage tent was flipped over by a gust of wind.

The wind gusts came on the eve of the thunderstorm forecasted for the region Tuesday and early Wednesday that is expected to drop upwards of 15 to 25 millimeters of rain with snow expected at 1700 meters overnight.

Wednesday Environment Canada is forecasting heavy rain at times throughout the day with amounts of 10 to 20 millimeters expected and snow at 1500 meters.

There’s a 60 percent chance of showers Wednesday evening with the snow level lowering from 1400 meters to 1000 meters and more winds of 20 km/h coming from the south.
