On Feb. 8-10, the Ross Van Mierlo sisters of Castlegar attended the provincial AA Swimming Championships in Surrey. Both girls swam a number of best times, with Tenysha (13 years old) grabbing bronze in the 800 and 200 freestyle events. She also placed in the finals in the 400 free and the 200 backstroke.

Head coach Tom Carew said, “She has been working really, really hard the last few years. She’s at the pool every day and gives it her all every time. She really deserved these results.”

On March 1-3, Gabriel Hanvold (Castlegar), Niallan Collier (Nelson), Riley Major (Castlegar), and Kelsey Andrusak (Nelson) will be attending the provincial AAA Swimming Championships in Victoria. This competition will mark the end of the short course swimming season and the beginning of the long course season.

“This is a little bit higher-calibre swimming event, and I think we have a shot at all of our kids making the finals,” Carew said, “and I think some of them have the potential for medals. Any provincial championship is always very exciting.”
