Trail’s RCMP Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) had a busy month January, according to a report submitted through last week’s regular city council meeting on Monday.

Highlights of the report, which was penned by CRU commanding officer Cpl. Darryl Orr, included charges being sworn against a Trail man Jan.1 for historical sexual interference.

“We can’t release the name of the individual until such time as he makes his first court appearance – and even then, there may be a publication ban to protect the victims as well as the (alleged) offender,” Orr explained.

January 3 saw a grow op raid in West Trail that resulted in the seizure of 53 marihuana plants and the arrest of a 62-year-old Trail woman, while Jan. 9 saw the CRU assist Kamloops RCMP in arresting one male and one female for allegedly stealing a snowmobile in Kamloops, then trying to sell it in Trail.

On Jan. 11, CRU officers located a stolen vintage vehicle and returned it to its rightful owner, while on the same day, they arrested two prolific offenders (a female in her late 20s and a male in his 30s).

“The female … was arrested for an outstanding warrant related to drug trafficking from a 2009 CRU undercover operation (and) the male … was arrested for break and enter and breach of probation,” Orr said, adding the man subsequently got 45 days in jail while the woman was sentenced to 60 days.

Orr said the CRU continued, throughout the month, to conduct checks on offenders with court-ordered behavioural restrictions (including one man who threw a Molotov cocktail at the Midway RCMP detachment) to ensure they remain in compliance with conditions.

A grow op bust in Salmo that netted 85 pot plants and 26 pounds of fresh marihuana which had been set out to dry became the purview of the Trail CRU because of the likely destination of the drugs, according to Orr.

“There aren’t many grow ops in Trail – Trail is almost exclusively supplied marihuana by Fruitvale, Salmo and, to a certain extent, Rossland,” he said. “Given the quantity of the seizure, CRU members suspected that this marihuana was in part destined for sale within the City of Trail.”

Finally, on Jan. 24, Trail CRU assisted RCMP in locating and arresting a 36-year-old male for assaulting his girlfriend. The male ran from police, but was ultimately captured and provided with a court date.
