Apparently, local police aren’t going to buy it, if you tell them the $59,000 in your trunk is just extra spending cash, according to West Kootenay Traffic Services Sgt. Derrick Donovan.

“On Feb. 11 at approximately 7 p.m.,  an officer from the Nelson West Kootenay Traffic Services, with the assistance of the Salmo RCMP, stopped a vehicle on Highway 3 West of Salmo which appeared to be driving in an erratic manner, Donovan said. “Upon further questioning the driver a search was conducted of the car which yielded $59,000 in suspicious Canadian currency, and approximately 1.5 pounds of marihuana bud.

“The 32-year-old Alberta male is due in Nelson Court on April 9 to answer to charges of Possession of Proceeds of Crime, and possession of marihuana for the purpose of trafficking.”

As for what, exactly, constitutes ‘suspicious’ currency, Donovan said the sheer amount was questionable and, when combined with the drug seizure, made the money highly suspect.
