A local shipbuilder is determined to refloat the vessel that was seen starting to sink Sunday into Kootenay Lake near the Chahko Mika Mall in Nelson.

Nelson resident Gary Ramsbottom built the “Pirate Ship” virtually from scratch when he saw an old and weathered wooden hull by the side of the road.

He purchased the hull and began building the Pirate Ship using discarded material — recycled wood and old pieces of furniture.

Members of the Kootenay Lake Sailing Association heard about sinking of the Pirate Ship and are busy trying to help Ramsbottom move the boat to the Prestige Inn for the start of reclamation project.
