Cellar-dwelling TWU shocks Saints 2-1, ends unbeaten streak at 13

The Selkirk Saints probably knew their winning streak would come to an end someday.
But against the last-place Trinity Western Spartans?
The Fraser Valley gang scored goals in the first two periods, then held off a late Selkirk rally to edge the Saints 2-0 in B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey action Friday at the Castlegar Arena Complex.
The loss ends the Saints unbeaten streak at 13 games.
Selkirk owns the BCIHL record for the longest winning streak in league play.
“We came out slow tonight, gave up a pair of goals directly off turnovers and couldn’t generate the offensive chances that we needed to get back in the game,” said Saints head coach Jeff Dubois after the loss.
“TWU battled hard all night and took full advantage of a couple of mental errors on our part. Hopefully we’ll take some hard lessons from tonight and come back with a strong effort on Sunday.”
Cody Stephenson in the first period and Trevor Beaupre with a power play marker in the second was all the scoring Trinity Western would need.
TWU then turned the game over to netminder Tim Zwlers who stopped all but one of the 48 shots fired at the Spartans by the Saints.
Connor McLaughlin is the lone Saint to beat Zwlers.
The Saints still lead the BCIHL standings by five points over Simon Fraser University.
Selkirk travels to Eastern Washington on Sunday for a 3 p.m. faceoff.
