The Hip Hop & Jazz classes start this week and will run until the first week of March.   The classes are offered in the MacLean Annex on First Ave. between St. Paul and Monte Christo.  Classes are on Tuesdays from 3:00-3:45pm for 5-6 year olds, 4:00-5:00pm for 7-9 year olds, 5:00-6:00pm for 10-13 year olds.  On Wednesdays, classes for Teens run from 5:30-6:30pm and Adults from 6:45-7:45pm.  The classes are taught by Meg Wadsworth and are guaranteed to be high energy, addictive and fun!  

The Lil’ Gretzky’s Preschool Hockey program for kids 3-5 years is running this month.   The program runs on Mondays from 3:15-4:15pm until the end of the month.   The program encourages getting comfortable on the ice and in an Arena setting and is geared towards children with limited or no skating experience.  This is a great building block to our Recreation Hockey Program for older kids and is coordinated by Kari Kuznecov.    

If you’re visiting Rossland over the weekend, the Joe Hill Coffee House is on Sunday, January 20 at 7:00pm in the Miners’ Hall.  The Coffee House is a wonderful blend of music, dance, poetry readings, singing and an eclectic blend of Kootenay’s performing arts.   Take a break from the snow, relax with friends and enjoy some yummy goodies.  Admission is only $3.00 and kids and students are free.

Public Skatingfor the week of January 14 to 20 is on Wednesday, January 16 from 6:30-7:45pm, Friday January 18 from 5:00-6:30pm and Sunday, January 20 from 2:30-4:00pm and 6:00-7:30pm. The Winter session for Karate has begun and runs until March 2013.  The program is for Youth as young as 12 years old and runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays, in the MacLean Gymnasium from 6:30-8:00pm.  If you’re a Karate beginner, the Instructor will provide separate instruction until you can manage the basics.  The Rossland Shotokan Karate Club has been operating continuously since 1996 and new students are accepted in the months of September and January. 

If you’re looking for some art classes, there’s an Adult Art class that runs on Monday nights from 7:00-8:30pm and a children’s Cartooning Class on Wednesdays that runs from  5:15-6:15pm.  Both courses are open to drop in if you’re not able to commit to the entire session. 

Sr.’s Hockeystarts up again this week, on Fridays from 9:30 to 10:45am.  This ice time is for Senior and/or “laid back” players who are committed to ensuring a fun and safe game of hockey.  Players are expected to play in the spirit of fellowship and sportsmanship.  All abilities are encouraged and welcome!  For more information, please contact the program coordinator, Mike Ramsey at m.ramsey@telus.net

If you’re a parent of a preschooler, there’s a new Parent & Child Mother Goose Program running on Saturdays, from 11:00am to 12:00pm, starting January 12 and running until March 16.  This program is offered through the Public Library for babies 6-18 months and their parents.  To reserve a place, please contact the Children’s Librarian, Lynn Amann, at children@rossland.bclibrary.caor by phone, at 250-362-7611. 

The outdoor rink is located on 3rd Ave, between Spokane and Washington and weather permitting is open to the Public.    Red Mountain also has an outdoor ice rink for the public’s use and the rental department has a small fleet of rental skates available. 

The Rossland Public Library is offering a 3:00pm “Movies & Munchies” program, every third Wednesday of the month.  This month, the date is Wednesday, January 16 at 3:00pm.  Kids will enjoy five different cartoons from the National Film Board – quirky, interesting independent films – while enjoying a healthy snack!  For more information, contact the Library, at 250-362-7611 or info@rossland.bclibrary.ca.  

Have you ever wanted to join the Rossland Community Potters Society?  The Society would like everyone to take a class before becoming a member.  If you’re interested, there are a few classes to choose from coming up in January and February.   For more information, please contact Sarah Zanussi, the Society President, at 250-362-2260. 

If you’re new to town and wondering about drop in hockey, there are two Recreation times set aside.  The Tuesday night Co-Ed REC Hockey runs from 9:45-11:00pm and the Sunday hockey runs from 9:15-10:30pm.  The drop in fee is $10.00 per person, or you can purchase a 10X pass at the REC Department, for $80.00.  The Saturday Co-Ed Rec Hockey has cancelled, so make sure you take advantage of the Tuesday / Sunday ice times.
