Eight rinks hoping for trip to Silver City at Senior's Curling Zones

Many of the big names from years past in men’s curling have moved up a league are in Cranbrook this weekend to compete for zone bragging rights at the Senior Men’s Region 1-2 Curling Championships.

Eight teams from throughout the Kootenays are shooting for an automatic berth in the provincials at the Trail Curling Club.

Some of the curlers playing include, former B.C. Brier reps Gerry Kent and Tom Shypitka of Cranbrook, Fred Thomson of Nelson, Don Freschi of Trail and Ken McHargue of Sparwood.

There are two teams each from Creston, Nelson and Trail and one from both Castlegar and Sparwood.

The first draw goes Friday with Tom Shypitka of Nelson facing Myron Nichol of Castlegar, the two Creston rinks squaring off Doug Hannah and Ralph Will, Nelson’s Nando Salviulo up against McHargue and Don Bedard playing fellow Trail clubmate Rob Ferguson.

There are three draws Saturday before the final rep is determined in two daws Sunday.

The 2013 Tim Hortons BC Seniors Curling Championship is scheduled for the Silver City February 11-17.
