Nelson Police was kept busy Thursday with no less than four major calls for assistance, the final response to deal with a woman threatening to commit suicide at the Big Orange Bridge.

Witnesses reported seeing the female over the edge of the (Nelson Bridge) railing with a large knife in her hand,” Nelson Sergeant Janet Scott-Pryke said in a written release.

“NPD members working a counterattack road check by the bridge were first on scene.”

The call came in at 8:30 p.m. that a woman was on the bridge in a suicidal state with a large knife in her hand.

Luckily, NPD members were conducting a Counterattack Road Check near the bridge and quickly responded, successfully negotiating with the female to give up the knife before returning safely to the deck.

The female was transported to Kootenay Lake Hospital under the Mental Health Act to be assessed by medical staff.

Three pedestrians hit by vehicles in six-hour span

Earlier in the day, police were called to the 400 block of Stanley Street shortly after noon to investigate a pedestrian hit by a vehicle.

Police report the pedestrian was assessing damage done to her vehicle from a previous MVI when a second vehicle attempted to complete a U- turn into a parking spot, striking the pedestrian on the turn around.

No injuries were sustained.

A short time later, a pedestrian was transported by ambulance to Kootenay Lake Hospital after being struck in the near the 7-Eleven Convenience store.

The incident, happening at 4:30 p.m. during rush hour, forced motorists to find alternate routes on the evening commute as officers shut down the major artery for a short time to investigate accident.

Injuries to the pedestrian are undetermined at this time.

The third accident involving a pedestrian occurred at approximately 6 p.m. at the intersection of Ward and Carbonate Streets.

The female was crossing Ward Street in the marked crosswalk when a truck turning left onto Ward struck the person.

The pedestrian was treated at Kootenay Lake Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

All three motor vehicle incidents are still under investigation by Nelson Police at this time.

NPD would like to remind pedestrians and drivers to be aware of their surroundings at all time.

As the days get shorter and the weather deteriorates it is important for pedestrians to be seen.

Pedestrians should be wearing reflective or light coloured clothing so drivers can be aware of them.

Drivers should keep their vehicle windows clear and slow down when approaching marked and unmarked crosswalks.
