Saints continue to roll through BCIHL teams, blast UVic 10-2

Selkirk scored eight unanswered goals, two by former KIJHL star Connor McLaughlin, to blast the defending B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League champ University of Victoria 10-2 in action Saturday at the Castlegar Recreation Complex.
The win runs the Saints unbeaten streak to six to start the season and gives the West Kootenay squad four-point lead over second-place Simon Fraser University in BCIHL standings.
“We came out slow tonight and about halfway through the first period it looked like we were determined to get away from what had made us successful through the first three weeks of the season,” said Saints head coach Jeff Dubois.
“But to the credit of our group the feet started moving and the work habits for the remainder of the game were excellent.”
UVic scored first before the Saints got going to lead 2-1 after one frame on goals by McLaughlin and Cody Fidget.
Selkirk then took over the game, scoring four times in the second before adding four more markers in the third.
McLaughlin finished the game with the hat-trick while Jordan Wood added a pair. Other goals were scored by Mason Spear, Thomas Hardy, Scott Swiston and Logan Proulx.
Replying for UVic were Brad Robinson and Mark Prest.
Stephen Wolff stopped 23 of 21 shots to register the win in goal for the Saints.
“We’ve been putting up some big numbers the last few times out and that’s been the result of hard-working, honest and unselfish hockey,” Dubois said.
“When we stick to those habits the results have been very good.”
The win was the third of the season for Selkirk over the Island squad.
The first two games were one goal affairs.
The Saints will now prepare for a tough weekend on the road that includes a visit to Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops on Friday night and Simon Fraser University in Vancouver on Saturday.

SAINTS NOTES: Connor McLaughlin led the way offensively for the Saints with a hat trick and two assists, while his line accounted for a dozen points with Mason Spear (four points) and Scott Swiston (three) also in on the action. . . .Jordan Wood leads the Saints and BCIHL in scoring with 14 points. Selkirk players hold down the top nine spots in BCIHL scoring. . . .Selkirk has now outscored their opponents by a margin of 35-4 in four home games 44-11 overall.
