The Dam Inn Mates held off a late charge by Castlegar to remain undefeated in the West Kootenay Men’s Flag Football League.

The Mates Kelly Voykin tossed a pair of touchdowns sparking the home side to a 26-24 victory over the Castlegar Vikings Sunday at Mount Sentinel Field.

The win was the fourth of the season for the first-place Mates.

Dam Inn started the game fast as Voykin connected for his first TD pass on the opening drive.

Joel Devito then picked off a Steve Mota pass to give the Mates excellent position for another run at the end zone.

Despite the slow start, Mota led the charge against a Mates defence that lost a few key starters in Mike Lucas and Nate Fedorchuk.

But the rally was shortlived as the Mates were able to hold on to secure the two-point victory.

Voykin also rushed for one major while connecting for a one-point conversion.

The other pivot for Dam Inn, Vic Hoodicoff also had a TD pass and a one-point conversion.

Devito, Ken Malakoff and Rick Nixon were on the receiving end of TD passes from Hoodicoff and Voykin.

Dan Rywaczuk and Del Melnyk also had interceptions for Dam Inn.

In the preliminary game, Nelson Hour Glass had an easy time keeping pace with Dam Inn as the Heritage City squad earned a freebee after Brewers forfeited the game due to lack of players.

The league is idle Thanksgiving weekend before returning to action October 14 when Dam Inn meets Brewers at 11 a.m. and Hour Glass plays the Vikings at 1 p.m.
