A 70-year-old pilot from Nanaimo walked away with minor injuries after his float plane crashed early this morning into Second Lake, located south of Nanaimo, according to RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien.

“At approximately 9:15 a.m. on Sept. 18, Nanaimo RCMP received a call alerting them to the crash of a float plane at Second Lake (south of Nanaimo),” he said.  “RCMP investigators immediately contacted CFB Comox SAR (Search and Rescue) Squadron Cormorant, who were activated and participated in the initial response. Nanaimo RCMP then responded, along with BC paramedics, and found the pilot along shore of the lake.

“The pilot was not(seriously) injured and was examined by paramedics at the scene. The plane, a two seat ultra light, equipped with floats, sustained significant damage and was towed to shore by a local logging company.

“It is unknown at this time what caused the crash and the Transportation Safety Board will be assuming the lead role in the investigation.”
