A local man is thanking his lucky stars a close acquaintance wasn’t sleeping inside a converted school bus when fire broke out Sunday afternoon at 3406 Highway 6 south of Nelson.

The fire started at approximately 2 p.m.

The man thought the acquaintance was sleeping inside the converted Bluebird school bus when fire started.

“I thought (name withheld) was sleeping inside so when the fire happened I went over to bang on the doors trying to wake her up,” the man told The Nelson Daily.

“I then grabbed a rock and smashed one of the windows. That’s when (name withheld) came over and told me she wasn’t inside the bus.”

When Nelson Fire Department arrived with two trucks and a handful of firefighters the bus was fully engulfed.

NFD quickly doused the fire, keeping flames to an immediate area surrounding the bus that was parked at the end of a road amongst trees.

Cause of the fire is unknown, although there was a long electrical cord connected from the house to the bus.

No one was hurt in the fire.

The 1970’s Bluebird bus was completely gutted.
