For the general public that forgot to book a campsite or hotel room or just don’t want a lot of driving in the Victoria Day long weekend, check out May Day celebrations in Kaslo or New Denver.

Both celebrations have been around for more than 100 years — Kaslo 119 and New Denver 105 years young.

New Denver kicks off the celebrations Thursday with the Queen’s Pagent.

Some of the events in New Denver include a fishing derby, soap box race, golf tournament, bike rodeo, kids soccer games, beach volleyball tournament and the traditional pancake breakfast Sunday morning.

The parade goes Monday at 10 a.m.

A few kilometers to the north is the Kaslo May Days.

The public is welcome to attend North America’s longest running May Day Pole Dance hosted by Kaslo’s first-graders.

There’s also Logger sports competition Sunday, the show ‘n’ shine antique car show, the Sk8park demo, the horse show, the slo-pitch ball tournament and the May Day Parade on Victoria Day Monday.
