Cars being targeted for smash-and-grabs at Bombi Summit
Police are reporting five separate incidences since January in which thieves have stolen from cars parked at the Bombi Summit.
“The majority of the vehicles that have been targeted are snowmobilers that park there for a day, and also people that are skiing in to the cabins for a few days,” said RCMP Sgt. Laurel Mathew. “Numerous items have been stolen from the cars, from wallets to electronic devices to clothing. On one occasion, the gas was syphoned out of the vehicle as well.”
She said thieves are entering the vehicles by whatever means necessary, in some cases even punching out the locks on the car doors.
“Because some vehicles are parked there for a few days at a time, and the thefts are not noticed until people come out to leave, it is unknown if the thefts are happening during the day or night, and often the thefts are being reported once people are back at home, in some cases out of province or country,” Mathew said, adding that police have no suspects at this time.
“People are reminded to not leave anything of value in their unattended vehicle, as they are an easy target, with no one around when the thefts are occurring.”
Anyone with information on these thefts is asked to call the Castlegar RCMP at (250)365-7721 or Crime stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
