Cat saves life of Taghum man after fire completely destroys house Saturday morning
A resident’s cat saved the life of a Nelson man after fire completely gutted the house across the C.P Rail tracks from Taghum Hall Saturday morning.
Taghum is located approximately 10 kilometers west of Nelson on Highway 3A.
At approximately 7:20 a.m., the man awoke to the sound of his cat causing a ruckus. After awaking from a deep sleep the man noticed his house was on fire.
The Taghum resident escaped the flames, but unfortunately the cat failed to make it out alive.
RCMP officers as well as at least 20 firefighters from Beasley and Blewett Fire Departments responded to the blaze but the house was already engulfed in flames when they arrived.
Firefighters worked diligently to contain the flames and save an adjacent residence next to the man’s house.
The adjacent house is also owned by the Taghum man but was unoccupied.
The house was built in 1903 and served as a passenger stop for CPR trains and Greyhound busses through the years.
The man was given oxygen at the scene before being taken to Kootenay Lake Hospital by B.C. Ambulance.
He was later released.
RCMP and the Beasley Fire Department continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
