Kootenay Cats outlast Cougars in Female Midget AAA series thriller
The Kootenay Wildcats are off to the second round of the B.C. Female Midget AAA Hockey League after polishing off the Prince George Cougars in the best-of-three quarterfinal Sunday at the NDCC Arena.
The Cats staged a rally for the archieves by scoring five third-period goals en route to a 6-4 victory to advance to the semi finals against regular season champ Fraser Valley Phantom.
Kootenay opened the best-of-three playoff series with a 1-0 win Friday in Nelson.
Katie Yuris of Trail scored the only goal in the second period while Sarah Doll of Cranbrook pitched the shutout.
Prince George rallied back to square the set with a 4-3 victory Saturday.
Sunday, Kootenay turned a 4-1 deficit into five consecutive third-period goals to steal the win and the series.
Shea Weighill of Nakusp led the offensive assault with two goals. Christina Bonacci, Jordyn Lee of Cranbrook, Donomie Vockeroth of Rossland, and Yuris also scored for Kootenay.
Kelly Shawara scored twice to lead Prince George.
Doll, an affilate player, was in goal to register the win.
