Families forced to wait another year for family day holiday said B.C. Federation of Labour president, Jim Sinclair

B.C. Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair said Friday that working families in B.C. are disappointed they must wait yet another year for Family Day.
“B.C. families are working harder and harder, but having a tougher time making ends meet,” said Sinclair in a written press release.
“A holiday in February is one small gesture in these challenging times for families, and it’s one that families are going to have to wait for.”
A Statistics Canada study found that Canadian workers in 2005 were working longer and as a result were spending 45 minutes less each day with their families on work days than they did in the 1980s.
Premier Christy Clark first promised Family Day during her campaign for the leadership of the B.C. Liberal Party, but won’t implement her promise until February, 2013, almost two years after her election as leader.
“Families in provinces east of us and in the states north and south of us will enjoy a long weekend in February,” Sinclair said.
“Very few jurisdictions in North America have no public holiday between New Year’s Day and Easter, but for another year B.C. will be one of them.”
Family Day is observed in Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan on the third Monday of February.
This holiday celebrates the importance of families and family life to people and their communities.
