Giants sweep Kootenay to claim fifth straight BCMMHL title
The Vancouver Northwest Giants continued its dominance over the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League as the G-Men swept the Kootenay Ice this past weekend in Trail.
The Giants won the two games at the Cominco Arena to capture first-place overall for the fifth straight season.
Vancouver scored four times in the third period to double the Ice 6-3 Saturday at the Cominco Arena.
Sunday, it was all Vancouver as the Giants blasted Kootenay 7-1.
During the opener, the Ice played the league leaders tough, entering the third period tied at 2-2.
But two power play goals snapped the tie and powered the Giants to the win.
Six different players scored for Vancouver.
Replying for Kootenay was Justin Post of Nelson, with a pair, and Castlegar’s Darren Medeiros.
Kimberley Newell of Nelson was in goal for the Ice.
Sunday, Jared Lukosevicius scored twice and added two assists to lead the Giants in the rout.
Adam Helewka, finishing the weekend with eight points, also had four for Vancouver.
Riley Brandt of Trail scored the lone goal for Kootenay.
Brett Soles of Cranbrook took the loss in goal for Kootenay.
The Giants goaltending tandem Liam Smith of Burnaby and Braden Krogfoss from Cloverdale, once again gave the Giants the opportunity to win.
The netminding pair has been lights-out this season allowing a League best 58 goals in 36 games.
Kootenay is back on the road this weekend with a pair of games in Abbotsford against the Fraser Valley Bruins.
Next home action for Kootenay is February 25 in Castlegar.
