Two East Kootenay rinks will carry the zone colours at the B.C. Senior Men’s Curling Championships after zone playdowns wrapped up Sunday at the Nelson Curling Club.

Ken McHargue and Ralph Will, both of Sparwood, won the two qualifying spots for the upcoming provincials set for March in Abbotsford.

McHargue, former B.C. Provincial Men’s Champ Gerry Kent at third, second David Ednicott and lead Grant Klapp edged Will 8-6 in the A qualifier Sunday to advance.

McHargue scored three in the tenth end to seal the victory.

Will, defeating Alan Barclay of Nelson 7-6 and Don Bedard of Grand Forks 7-3 before losing to McHargue, was able to bounce back in the B qualifier to outlast Myron Nichol of Castlegar 8-6.

Nichol had the longer of the two B finalists as the Sunflower City skip lost 8-6 to McHargue in A event action Saturday.

Nichol outlasted Barclay 10-9 in B event play before romping past Rob Ferguson of Trail 12-5.

Against Ferguson Nichol scored in bunches, grabbing three in the fifth and eighth ends.

In B-qualifier, Nichol, Garry Beaudry of Nelson, Jim Swanson and Rob Babiarz, gave up a three-spot in the seventh to turn 3-3 tie into a 6-3 deficit.

Trailing 8-5 Nichol failed on a difficult triple-takeout to tie the game, instead settling for a single point.

The Garry Meadows rink of Nelson, with third Tim Beecham, second Harry Davidson and lead Don Horasym, lost two straight in the seven-team playdown.

Berry, Bedard slide off to Abbotsford

Marilyn Berry of Invermere and Trail’s Rhonda Lee Bedard earned provincial qualifying spots during the Kootenay Senior Women’s Playdowns Sunday at the Nelson Curling Club.

Berry, third Barbara Fassnidge, second Sandra Quinn-Boyes and lead Cindy Stevenson defeated Bedard 9-8 in the A qualifier.
Trailing 4-2, Berry outscored Bedard 7-4 down the stretch to seal the win.

Bedard, third Rose Beauchamp, second Laurel Babcock and lead Anne Marie Byers, came back in the B qualifier to defeat Jane Kryczka of Sparwood 9-3.

The two Kootenay rinks advance to the B.C. Senior Women’s Championships in Abbotsford.
