The future’s so bright the Mount Sentinel Wildcats has better get out the shades.
Despite finishing 11th in the 16-team B.C. High School A Girl’s Volleyball Tournament, the youthful Cats are ready to make a push for next season.
“We competed (and) we played well beyond “being happy to be there”,’ said head coach Joe Moreira.
Mount Sentinel, entering the tournament as the second seed out of the Kootenay zone, defeated Kootenay rival Elkford 2-0 in consolation play in the final game of the tournament.
The Cats, seeded ninth, opened the tourney matched in the very competitive pool against fourth-ranked Cedar and fifth-ranked Houston Christian.
Mount Sentinel defeated a scrappy Ebenezer team to place third in the pool.
The result put the Cats against Duncan Christian in playoff action.
“I think were a bit unlucky to end up on the losing end of the five-set match,” Moreira explained. “We were up 10-7 in the 5th but couldn’t find a way to finish the set, losing 15-12 to Duncan Christian.”
Mount Sentinel then defeated Chetwynd in consolation action before losing to Keremeos 16-14 in the third set.
Kelowna Christian defeated Highroad Academy of Chilliwack to capture the provincial title.
Immaculata of Kelowna got past Richmond Christian to claim the bronze medal.
However, next year watch out for the Cats.
“We have no Grade 12’s on the roster so we anticipate to be a stronger team next year,” said Moreira.
