Managing avalanches and martial arts in 3 hours each...Rossland Rec strikes again!

There’s a FREE Backcountry Avalanche Workshop being put on by the Canadian Avalanche Centre in Rossland in the RSS Gymnasium this Thursday evening, December 1, from 6:30 – 9:30pm. The workshop is being run by CAA avalanche forecaster Penny Goddard. All ages are welcome and there are lots of great door prizes to be won! Workshop topics include; 10 commandments, travel techniques, myth busters, triggering avalanches, avalanche characters and rescue techniques.  Voluntary non-perishable donations will be collected for Rossland Fire Fighters Hamper Fund. Indoor Volleyball at RSS is cancelled on December 1 for the Avalanche Workshop.  

Family basketball on Monday nights, from 7:00-8:00pm in the RSS gym is a great way to get some exercise and spend some quality time with your kids!

Have you ever wondered about Chinese Martial Arts and the various forms and techniques?  Instructor Wayne Cheung is offering a 3 hour workshop on Saturday, December 3 from 9:30am – 12:00pm in the Miners’ Hall that will provide you with a comprehensive overview of the discipline.  Students can expect to learn the basics and foundations of all Chinese martial arts, including: the use of stance and bodywork (returning energy), basic qi-gong applications, the fundamental principles—the six harmonies and center-line theories, an introduction to the five Martial Arts styles available and an engaging discussion about the philosophy behind Chinese Martial Arts.  The cost is $10.00 per person. 

Adult Co-Ed REC Hockey has a great turnout on Tuesday and Sunday nights and starting December 3rd we’ll be introducing Saturday nights.  This is a fun, co-ed hockey program and a great way to meet local Rosslanders.  Drop in is $10.00 and a 10 punch pass is $80.00 – available at the Recreation Department.  Starting December 3, Saturday nights will run 9:15-10:30pm.  Tuesdays are from 9:45-11:00pm and Sundays are from 9:15-10:30pm. 

Senior’s Duffer Hockey is off to a great start!  If you enjoy playing hockey and have Tuesday mornings available, come out to the Rossland Arena for a fun game of ice hockey.  This is an ice time set aside for players who are 50+ with varying skills.  Players are expected to play the game of hockey in the spirit of fellowship and sportsmanship.  All abilities are encouraged and welcome!  Play time is from 9:30 to 10:45am on Tuesdays at the Rossland Arena.  If you’re new to Rossland, enter the building from 2nd Ave, where you’ll find the change rooms and the washroom, immediately to your right. 

Public skating at the Arena is on Wednesdays from 6:30-7:45pm, Fridays from 5:00-6:30pm, Sundays from 2:30-4:00pm and then again from 6:00-7:30pm.  The Sunday 2:30pm skate sometimes cancels as a result of Minor Hockey Tournaments.  On Sunday, December 4, Public Skating is only from 6:00-7:30pm.  Please check the website to confirm, or give the Arena a call, after hours at 250-362-7396 ext. 1229.    Skate rentals are available if you don’t have your own.  If you do own skates and you need them sharpened, the Arena Attendant would be happy to sharpen them.  

The Little Gretzky’s Hockey program started Tuesday, November 22 from 11:00-11:45am in the Rossland Arena.  Team Profilli has signed on to lead the next generation of hockey players to learn the fundamentals of skating and hockey.  If you have a preschooler in the house, who would like to learn to skate and play hockey, register them for the Little Gretzky’s program!   Skaters need a full face hockey mask, neck guard, skates, good mits or gloves and a hockey stick.  Parents are encouraged to come out on the ice and will also need a full face hockey helmet and skates.  Drop ins are welcome at $10.00 per family.

Rossland’s Rougemusic kicks off the Christmas season with a concert of Christmas music from the Baroque to the Contemporary. Alison Girvan, vocal soloist from Nelson teams up with contemporary jazz guitarist and Selkirk College faculty member Paul Lansberg.  The Concert is on Saturday, December 10th at 7:30 pm at the Rouge Gallery in Rossland’s historic bank building. Hip Hop and Jazz starts January 24 on Tuesdays, in the MacLean Annex.  Each week brings a new and exciting hip hop combination.  The pace is energetic and the class is pumped.  The emphasis is on having fun and felling good while dancing hard and getting a great workout.  Whether you’re a first timer or weekly regular, each hip hop dance class will leave you with a sense of accomplishment and empowerment!   

Need to improve your ski waxing skills?  Kootenay Nordic Sports will be hosting ski Wax Clinics again this year with the first one on December 7 at 7:00pm.  This is a basic waxing skills clinic.  These evenings will be by donation with all proceeds going to Skier Development at BlackJack. We will also be offering 10% off all ski wax and waxing related products.
