A 19-year-old Golden man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a sexual assault that occurred in the summer of 2010.

On July 13, 2010, a woman from Vancouver was walking on the trail above Reflection Lake when she was approached by a male with a cell phone in hand. The male asked if she had dropped it, to which she replied she did not.

The victim assisted the male by looking through the contacts in the phone to see if an owner could be identified.  As she looked through the phone, the male shoved her into the bushes and sexually assaulted her.

As a result of the victim’s statement a suspect was quickly identified. Through the course of a year Golden/Field RCMP continued to investigate and gather evidence which led to the arrest of this male.

During the course of this investigation, police officers used a national computer program called Violent Crime Linkage Analysis System (ViCLAS) to determine any linkages to previous crimes committed by the same offender.

Evidence suggested that this suspect may indeed have been responsible for another sexual assault that occurred in Golden on September 28, 2009.

At that time a female was walking on the pedestrian walk way behind Country Wide Home Furnishings when a male came up behind her and asked if she dropped something.

When the female looked back to see what she may have dropped, the male pulled her pants down and attacked her. The female was able to defend herself against the attack at which point the male left.

The suspect appeared in Cranbrook Court September 1st to answer to the charges from both files.
