It was a hot time in Salmo last Tuesday.

On Aug. 16, Salmo RCMP were dispatched to a report of four youths starting a fire with gasoline at a gazebo in KP Park.

The fire was put out by a crew working in the park at the time, and the youth were located within minutes by police.

Two youth were detained briefly and all were eventually returned home to their parents and guardians. The youth ranged in age from eight to 12 years old.

Damage was minimal to the cement floor of the gazebo, but potential for disaster with the fire spreading to the structure and trees in the park was great.

“The quick response by the village crew working in the park was much appreciated,” said RCMP Cpl. Barry Graham, of the Central Kootenay RCMP in Salmo.

The gasoline used to start the fire was stolen from a vehicle near KP Park.

Police are continuing with the investigation and will be dealing with the youth involved.

RCMP requests parents emphasize with their children the dangers of forest fires and the potential damage that can occur when children or youth play with matches and start fires.
