Host West Kootenay/Boundary loves that home cooking, soar to second in team standings at 2011 West Kootenay B.C. Senior Games

It’s nice to have home court advantage for once.

And Zone 6 West Kootenay/Boundary took full advantage of the home cooking to score its best result ever, finishing second overall at the 2011 West Kootenay B.C. Senior Games Saturday.

The provincial event was hosted jointly Castlegar, Trail and Nelson.
 

Zone 6 West Kootenay/Boundary won whopping 240 medals, including 106 of the golden variety during the five-day event.

Zone 3 Fraser Valley topped the medal standings with 264 medals — 124 gold, 88 silver and 52 bronze.

Zone 6 West Kootenay/Boundary finished 24 medals behind Fraser Valley — 106 gold, 65 silver and 69 bronze.

Third was high-powered Lower Mainland with 132 gold, 61 silver and 44 bronze for 237 medals.

Vancouver Island North Zone 2 was fourth with Zone 5 Okanagan Similkameen fifth with 163 medals.

Zone 6 West Kootenay/Boundary scored most of its medals in the pool as the hosts tallied more than 75 medals, including 19 gold.
 

Leading the way was Elizabeth, please call me Betty, Brussel of Grand Forks who won no less than six gold medals in women’s 80-85 and 85-89 divisions.

Brussel took the top prize in 50-meter and 100-meter breaststroke in 80-85; gold in 40-meter and 80-meter freestyle, 100-meter backstroke and 25-meter freestyle in 85-89.

 

Bill Troil of Nelson also won three gold medals in men’s 55-59 50-meter butterfly and 50 and 100- meter freestyle.

Joan Gale of Grand Forks won two gold in women’s 75-79 25 and 50-meter freestyle.

Other gold medals in the pool were won by Barb Roberts of Rossland in women’s 75-79 50-meter backstroke; Bert Koehl of Castlegar in men’s 75-79 breaststroke; Audrey Andre of Castlegar in women’s 55-59 100-meter freestyle; Marilyn Johnstone of Grand Forks in women’s 70-74 50-meter freestyle; Frank Webster of Christina Lake in men’s 65-69 100-meter individual medley; Renice Townsend of Fruitvale in women’s 85-89 25-meter freestyle and Marylee Banyard of Nelson in women’s 75-79 200 meter individual medley.

Zone 6 West Kootenay/Boundary also won a truckload of gold medals in Track and Field at Haley Park in Warfield.

Cheryl Closkey of Castlegar won three gold medals in women’s 60-64-weight throw, hammer throw and weight pentathlon.

Gordon Hollingshead of Robson won a pair of gold medals in men’s 60-64 800 and 1500 meter races as did Don Currie of Slocan City with two top finishes in men’s 75-79 10-kilometer walk and 5000-meter power walk.

Barb Saunders of Nelson added more medals to her huge collection with gold in women’s 70-74 1500 and 5000 meters while Jean Lancaster of Nakusp took home gold in women’s 75-79 10-kilometer walk and 5000-meter power walk.

Saturday saw the games come to a end with closing ceremonies at the Castlegar Complex.

The 2012 BC Seniors Games will be hosted by Burnaby from August 21-25.
