Moroney fires a sizzling 66 to breeze to Granite Pointe title

Rossland/Trail’s Brenan Moroney destroyed the field en route to winning the Granite Pointe stop on the Zone One West Kootenay Junior Golf tournament Sunday in Nelson.
Moroney shot an amazing 6-under-par 66 to claim the tourney by 10 shots over Kevin Bennett of Redstone in Rossland and Champion Lakes golfer Alex Rugg.
“It started when (Brenan) holed a 4 iron from about 215 yards out on the second hole,” said Zone One coordinator Rob McKay.
“(Brenan) played fantastic all day and is well deserving of his second win of the season.”
Both Bennett and Rugg each won their respective divisions — Bennett the 17-18-year-old category and Rugg tops of the 15-16-year-old division.
Tanner Kopan of Christina Lake finished second behind Bennett with a 77 while Jordan Hoodikoff, Kopan’s teammate, was third.
James Booth of Champion Lakes was second in the 15-16 with an 81, one shot ahead of Garrett Underwood.
Braden McKay of Rossland/Trail topped the 13-14 division with an 87. McKay edged Carson Arcuri in a playoff. Isaac Janzen of Creston was third at 92.
In the under-12 division, Kaeden Lane of Christina Lake was first with Jackson Konkin of Rossland/Trail and Tyson MacKinnon of Castlegar third.
Nolan Taylor of Granite Pointe finished 12th overall with an 85. Nolan Renwick finished tied for 17th with a 93 with Alex Breen 27th.
Rossland/Trail’s McKay claims top prize in Nakusp
Saturday, Tyler McKay edged fellow Rossland/Trail club mate Brenan Moroney and Tanner Kopan of Christina Lake to clinch the overall title at the Nakusp Golf Course.
McKay finished with a 1-over-par round of 69. Kopan and Moroney each shot rounds of 71.
Kopan did manage to claim the 17-18 division over Kevin Bennett and Jordan Hoodikoff.
Moroney topped the 15-16 category over Garrett Underwood Alex Rugg and Ryan Page of Rossland/Trail.
Braden McKay of Rossland/Trail was first in the 13-14 division ahead of Zack Friedenburger and Dugan McInnes, both of Nakusp.
Kaeden Lane of Christina Lake and Adam Doskoch of Rossland/Trail finished first and second, respectively, in the under-12 division.
