Moroney wins opening Jr. tourney, Granite Pointe ready for golfers

Brenan Moroney sank a two-inch birdie putt on the second playoff hole to capture the first event on the West Kootenay Junior Golf circuit Saturday at the Balfour Golf Course.
Moroney’s approach shot into the green came ever so close to going into the hole making it easy for the Rossland/Trail golfer to defeat teammate Tyler McKay.
McKay missed a seven-foot birdie putt that would have extended the match.
Both players shot identical rounds of 81 at the par 72, 6,500-yard Balfour Golf Course.
McKay topped the 15-16-year-old division, six shots ahead of Brett Mangler of New Denver and MacKenzie Field of Christina Lake.
Nolan Taylor of Granite Pointe, winner of the longest drive competition, finished third in the 17-18-year-old division, won by Kevin Bennett of Redstone.
Jordan Hoodikoff of Christina Lake was second, one shot behind Bennett.
In the 13-14-year-old division Isaac Janzen of Creston won by a score of 83. Braden McKay of Rossland/Trail was second, one-shot behind Janzen.
Shawn Ellard of Kaslo and Zach Friedenberger of Nakusp finished tied for third.
Kevin MacDonald of Champion Lake won the closet to the pin competition.
The second stop on the tour goes Sunday in Christina Lake.

Granite Pointe open for business
It’s been more than a week since the first ball was teed off at Granite Pointe as the Rosemont course joins a long list of courses in the West Kootenay now open for business.
The par 72, 6,209-yard track has wintered very well with the greens looking close to mid-season form.
With panoramic views of the Kokanee Glacier, Kootenay Lake and the City of Nelson, the Granite Pointe is yet another one of the scenic courses golfers enjoy in the Kootenay Rockies Region.
