April 18th, 2011

It took three ballots but Adrian Dix finally won out over two other NDP leadership candidates Sunday and will become the new leader of the provincial Opposition.

The Vancouver-Kingsway MLA edged Mike Farnworth, after Dana Larsen and Juan de Fuca MLA John Horgan were dropped after the first and second ballots, respectively.

Dix received 9,772 votes  — Farnworth had 9,095 — and said during his victory speech his platform will improve healthcare — declaring his positive agenda regarding the environment and education.

In the debate Farnworth led in public and party polling heading into the vote at the Vancouver Convention Centre, but couldn’t compete with Dix’s policy-specific campaign that played to traditional NDP values. Dix won with 9,772 votes, compared with.

Dix was considered the most left leaning of the leadership candidates, and had major endorsements from the trade unions.
