The Castlegar/Nelson Midget Reps exploded for 19 goals in two games to head into the Christmas break on a high note.

Castlegar/Nelson bounced Trail Tier III 10-2 and 9-3 in a pair of West Kootenay Minor Hockey League games during the weekend.

The two wins improve the Reps season record to 8-19-4. Castlegar/Nelson opened the season going 15 games before registering its first win.

The strong weekend allows Castlegar/Nelson to bounce back from a 1-3 tournament result earlier this month. Elk Valley and Spokane U16 posted consecutive wins over Castlegar/Nelson by scores of 5-2 and 6-5.

The Reps bounced back to defeat Westside 8-5 before falling to South Okanagan 7-4.

Grant Matthews and Joseph Gauthier, both of Castlegar have led the Reps offensively. Matthews has accumulated 24 goals and 33 assists for 57 points while Gauthier has totaled 24 goals and 16 assists for 40 points.

John Katountas and Matthew Macdonald of Nelson have 24 and 20 points respectively.

The recent turnaround might be attributed to the signing of Nelson’s Jesse Yanke and netminder from Castlegar, Garrett Steeds.

Yanke has 13 points in five games while Steeds has been able to take some of the pressure of teammate James Tucker.

The Castlegar/Nelson squad is a mix of players from the two minor hockey associations. The associations needed to combine forces after it was determined the two could not ice teams individually.
