Castlegar did its best to ruin the weekend for the Nelson Leafs as the Sunflower City squad scored a pair of West Kootenay Minor Hockey Peewee Rep League wins.

Kadrian Klimchuk scored twice to lead Castlegar to a 3-1 victory Friday night at the Pioneer Arena.

Saturday, Klimchuk and Tanner Costa each had three points to lead Castlegar to a 5-2 win over Nelson at the Arena Complex.

The two wins leapfrogged Castlegar past Nelson in West Kootenay Minor Hockey Peewee Rep League standings.

Nelson managed to conclude the weekend with some positive results as the Leafs double Revelstoke 6-3 in a game played in Nakusp.

“It wasn’t as bad as it looks,” said Nelson coach Rod Podgorenko. “We had very good play from Merissa Dawson and Amit Bhabra and our goalies (Curt Doyle and Joey Timmermans) also played very well during the weekend.”

Friday, Castlegar scored one goal in each period to edge Nelson. Justin Podgorenko scored the lone goal for Nelson.

Saturday, Castlegar blitzed Nelson for four second-period goals to win its second game in as many days.

Everett Hicks and Aigne McGeady-Bruce replied for Nelson.
Sunday, Justin Podgorenko, with two goals and an assist, led Nelson offensively.

Jacob Shukin, Taylor Cooper, Logan Mengler and Ben Woodward added singles.
