Local hockey fans can now track more than just one Castlegar hockey hero in the NHL – the Oilers’ Shawn Horcoff will now have to share the local limelight with Luke Walker, 20, who was fifth-round draft choice for the Colorado Avalanche.

Walker is following in the footsteps of hockey dad Gordie Walker, who played in 31 NHL games with the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings.   In January of this year, Walker was a member of the gold-medal team at the 2010 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in Sasatchewan, and was playing for the Portland Winterhawks when he became 139th overall draft pick.   His career hasn’t been all glory and accolades, though – In December 2009, he had to have a plate surgically implanted in his chin after being hit in the face with a puck.
