April 1st, 2010

The KCTS is pleased to announce that our funding through the Regional District of Central Kootenay has been secured for the 2010 summer work program. This $65,000 will allow the KCTS to employ a maintenance crew of 3 people on the trails network and the trails manager.

The KCTS is also fortunate to have an additional $100,000 in federal government funding through the Job Opportunities Program (JOP) for unemployed forestry workers. This crew will be upgrading provincially designated trails, primarily located on crown land. The trails that are under consideration for further improvement are the 7 Summits and Old Glory trails. The KCTS has also been discussing the opportunity for summer use trails in the Blackjack tenure. Hopefully the JOP crew will be able to start work on beginner and intermediate level trails in this area.

On a disappointing note Lower Oasis is permanently closed at the request of the landowner and will not be reopened. It has been a priority of the KCTS to find an alternative route for this trail since the fall of 2009, but to this point we do not have a viable option identified. The KCTS recognizes that Oasis was a very popular trail and we are continuing working on an alternative. Upper Oasis is also closed but we are hopefully that it can be rerouted on crown land and be reopened this summer.

The KCTS is also pleased to announce that new map has been printed and is now available. Please see local retailers to purchase a copy.

There is one upcoming event for the KCTS please mark you calendars and it would be great to see you there!
