On April 2, 2009 at approximately 600 PM, Trail & Greater District RCMP received a report of a missing snow boarder at Red Mountain, at Rossland, B.C. The 20 year old boarder, identified as John Hansen of Rossland, was with friends but became separated and appeared to take a wrong turn and ended up in the Esling Creek drainage.

PEP was activated, Rossland Search & Rescue commenced a search and located a track, but due to darkness, the rescue attempt was put off until morning.

Hansen was described as experienced, well dressed, had water and fire-starting equipment.

On the morning of April 3, 2009 at 730 AM, Hansen was located with the help of a local helicopter. A rescue team along with a police service dog team was dropped off from the helicopter and walked Mr. Hansen out to a pad where they could board the helicopter and return to base. Hansen was in excellent shape after his night on the mountain.
