Brewers steamroll to Sunfest Tournament Title

Dewars Brewers had the offence running on all cylinders, putting up 10 runs during a 10-8 victory over Trail Mariners in Castlegar Sunfest Minor Division Baseball Tournament Sunday in the Sunflower City. The win was the fifth of the tournament for the Brewers. Nelson opened with a 10-4 win over Castlegar Steelers followed by a narrow 10-9 win over Castlegar Royals. The Brewers then outlasted the Castlegar Raptors 12-7 to conclude the round robin draw with a 3-0 record. In the semi finals, Nelson edged the Raptors again, this time by a 6-4 score.

Glade residents anxious, feel ‘under the gun’ as logging plans loom

Residents of Glade say they can often hear the Kalesnikoff lumber mill, on the opposite bank from their Kootenay River community, as it processes hundreds of thousands of cubic metres of lumber every year. Soon those operations will be a lot closer to them. “The [Kalesnikoff] woodland manager said there would be 350 logging truck loads, 700 trips going thru our community,” says Heather McSwan of the Glade Watershed Protection Society (GWPS).

In media release Saturday, the Regional District of Central Kootenay is rescinding the Evacuation Order for three homes on Picard Road due to a reduced risk of flooding. The area will remain on Evacuation Alert and residents should be prepared to evacuate if necessary. The Regional District of Central Kootenay has declared a State of Local Emergency and an Evacuation Order for Slocan Valley West Road following flooding due to a continued rise of the Slocan River. In a media release Thursday, the RDCK said several sections of Slocan Valley West Road have meanwhile been submerged.

Alberta man faces charges for trafficking cocaine

Nelson Police said a man from Alberta is scheduled to appear in Provincial Court on a trafficking charge following an arrest early Wednesday morning near Cottonwood Park. NPD Sergeant Dino Falcone said the arrest happened at approximately 2 a.m. while members were conducting a routine patrol in the industrial area near Cottonwood Falls Park. "While members were conducting routine patrols, they discovered what appeared to be a suspicious vehicle with two people loitering around it in an industrial area near Cottonwood Falls Park," Falcone explained.
