KBRFR: Quick Action Protects West Trail Home and Rescues Family Pets

Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue responded to a reported structure fire at a single-family residence on Austad Lane in West Trail at 9:06 a.m. on the morning of Aug. 27, according to a press release issued by KBRFR.
“Trail Station 374 firefighters arrived to find heavy black smoke coming from the home,” the release read. “The occupants had safely evacuated and confirmed that all residents were outside; however, several family pets remained inside, including two cats, a hamster, and a beloved bearded dragon.”
The release said a second alarm was immediately requested to bring additional personnel and equipment to the scene. Firefighters quickly initiated an interior fire attack, bringing the fire under control within minutes of the first engine’s arrival.
As additional crews arrived, firefighters conducted a search of the residence, checking for fire extension, and ventilated the structure. All of the family’s pets were successfully rescued.
BC Ambulance Service assessed the occupants at the scene for possible smoke inhalation. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental.
