RDKB Invites Residents to Help Shape the Future of Waste Management Through Survey #2 and Community Engagement Events
The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) is inviting residents to continue the conversation about the future of waste management by participating in the second phase of engagement for its Solid Waste Management Plan update.
Following strong participation in Survey #1, the project is now moving into the next stage, where residents are being asked to help identify and prioritize the strategies and actions that will guide waste management services across the region for the next decade.
Originally approved in 2005, the Solid Waste Management Plan is being updated to reflect changing community needs, new technologies, evolving regulations, and the region’s continued commitment to waste reduction and environmental stewardship.
“The response to our first survey demonstrated that residents care deeply about how waste is managed in our communities,” said Grace McGregor, Chair of the RDKB Board. “We’re grateful to everyone who took the time to participate and encourage residents to stay involved as we move into the next phase. This plan will influence important decisions about waste reduction, recycling, organics, and landfill management for years to come.”
Survey #1 focused on understanding residents’ current experiences with waste services and identifying priorities for the future. Results showed strong support for existing waste reduction initiatives, a desire for increased diversion from landfill including expanded recycling opportunities, and continued efforts to improve environmental outcomes across the region.
“The first survey provided us with valuable insights into what matters most to residents,” said Terry Martin, Chair of the Solid Waste Management Plan Steering and Monitoring Committee. “Now we’re asking people to help us evaluate and prioritize the options that could shape waste management services in the RDKB over the next ten years.”
To encourage participation, everyone who completes Survey #2 by Friday, June 19, 2026, will be entered into a draw to win one of two $50 Everything Gift Cards.
In addition to the online survey, residents will have several opportunities to engage directly with project staff throughout June.
Upcoming community engagement events include:
• Trail – June 16, Waneta Plaza, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
• Grand Forks – June 17, Grand Forks Aquatic Centre, 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
• Rock Creek – June 18, Riverside Centre, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.Residents can also attend an online webinar on June 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., where project staff will provide an update on the planning process and answer questions from the public.
Janine Dougall, General Manager of Environmental Services, says community participation remains critical to developing a plan that reflects local priorities.
“This isn’t a one-time survey or a single engagement opportunity. It’s an ongoing conversation with residents across the region,” said Dougall. “The feedback we receive will help us identify the most effective and practical strategies for reducing waste, increasing diversion, and ensuring our waste management system remains sustainable for future generations.”
The Solid Waste Management Plan update is expected to continue through 2027 and will include multiple opportunities for residents, businesses, and community organizations to participate along the way.
