A new BC Hydro survey reveals that laundry, one of the most routine household chores, is quietly draining energy, time, and money from B.C. families. Outdated appliances and inefficient habits are costing households more than they realize, and many are missing simple opportunities to save.

The findings[1] show laundry overload is real: nearly 30 per cent of respondents do four or more loads each week, and almost half say they often feel fatigued by the repetitive task of transferring clothes from washer to dryer. Despite this weekly grind, more than half of British Columbians rarely or never consider energy efficiency when purchasing major appliances, a missed opportunity for long-term savings and convenience.

With 40 per cent of households considering appliance upgrades in the next two years, BC Hydro is encouraging families to rethink how they do laundry. For households overwhelmed by constant laundry cycles or prone to forgetting loads in the washer, combination washer and heat pump dryer units offer a smarter, more efficient solution. These all-in-one systems eliminate the need to move clothes between machines and deliver significant energy savings – more than $1,000 over their lifetime.

Additionally, ENERGY STAR® certified clothes washers can save up to $530 in energy costs over their lifetime, and dryers up to $210 compared to non-certified models.

To help households make the switch, BC Hydro is offering instant rebates on select high efficiency ENERGY STAR® appliances until January 2, 2026:

  • $75 – $150 off select ENERGY STAR® clothes dryers
  • $100 off select ENERGY STAR® combination washer/dryers
  • $50 off select ENERGY STAR® clothes washers.

Major appliances like refrigerators and freezers are also among the biggest energy users in the home. And for many households, one just does not cut it. More than half have two or more fridges or freezers, leading to extra costs. With these appliances running 24/7, upgrading to a more efficient model can be a smart way to save energy and money.

For example, upgrading to an ENERGY STAR® certified model can save up to $150 in energy costs over the appliance’s lifetime compared to older, less efficient units.

Right now, BC Hydro is offering $75 off select high-efficiency ENERGY STAR® refrigerators, making it a great time to upgrade and save. This limited-time offer is available until January 2, 2026.
