Plans advancing for Castlegar Airport expansion
The City of Castlegar is advancing plans to upgrade and expand the Air Terminal Building at the West Kootenay Regional Airport. At its June 23, 2025, meeting, Council approved engaging Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning Ltd. to lead the design work for this project based on their proposed team, past project experience, and value for the community.
Kasian Architecture’s contract represents approximately 10% of the expected construction cost, which is within the typical range for architectural design services in complex buildings like airports. The expansion is supported by $6 million in external grant funding.
Design work is expected to begin this summer, and construction is anticipated to occur through 2027 and into 2028.
The terminal expansion will allow the airport to better meet traveller demand with larger aircraft, improve the passenger experience, and create increased revenue opportunities — all of which contribute to the long-term sustainability of airport operations.
“These upgrades demonstrate the City’s commitment to creating a modern airport that strengthens connections and supports regional economic growth,” says Mayor Maria McFaddin. “They ensure Castlegar is ready for larger planes, additional flights, and more passengers, while meeting safety requirements and improving the overall travel experience.”
The project aligns with the City’s 2023–2027 Strategic Plan, supporting the goals of delivering a boutique airport travel experience and preparing for growth in passengers and airport-related businesses, key components of the City’s vision for West Kootenay Regional Airport excellence.
