Cryptocurrency fraud continues to be reported to Trail RCMP
On Monday, March 10, a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer received a report about a 66-year-old Trail woman who was defrauded of $8,800 after investing in cryptocurrency through a publicly available website,” according to RCMP Sht. Mike Wicentowich.
“The woman was encouraged by the website to keep investing until the total amount of money invested reached $8,800,” Wicentowich said. “She was unable to retrieve her money as the website told her that it was locked up in her account
. The officer advised her not to send any more money to the website and referred her to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Website.”
The money is not recoverable.
We thank the public for continuing to come forward to report on these cryptocurrency scams. We hope others can learn from it and avoid investing in cryptocurrency. Greater oversight and regulation of cryptocurrency is believed to be needed to prevent this kind of fraud,
Wicentowich, said.
