Investing locally theme of Skills Centre community impact

Working with local companies and investing in local people is a common theme in the Skills Centre’s 2024 Community Impact Report.
From the Trail and area companies working on the Skills Centre’s major renovation of its new building, to new training programs that partner with local businesses and serve area residents, to a focus on poverty reduction solutions here in our community, the Skills Centre is making an impact.
“Almost all of our employment training programs are new in the past year, and we’ve expanded our service area to cover the entire Kootenays. To do that we’ve expanded our partnerships with organizations such as Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy, service providers, and even equine learning centres in Cranbrook and Grand Forks,” says Morag Carter, Skills Centre executive director.
“Here in Trail we’re so proud of the fact that 15 of the 16 companies that have worked on our renovation of our new building, representing a total of 136 people working on the project, are local companies. We have the talent here in our communities to make these things happen,” she adds.
While some of the Skills Centre’s poverty reduction work is part of a nation-wide effort, the people involved and the solutions they are seeking are concentrated here in the community.
“It’s been a big year for us with the renovation of our new building, and the community is going to be the big beneficiary of this investment. It’s going to be the greenest, most inclusive and accessible building in Trail, and it’s going to be a resource for the community,” Carter says.

The Skills Centre is a non-profit strengthening rural and industrial communities and workplaces in BC through workforce skills development, training services, social development and poverty reduction programming. It offers these skills training and wellness programs to all demographics to build a caring community of skilled, productive and engaged people.
