As high school students eagerly anticipate prom and graduation season, Drug Free Kids Canada is stepping up to support parents and guardians to ensure these memorable moments are safe and enjoyable for all.

The organization is proud to announce its upcoming webinar, A Prom to Remember, designed to equip caregivers with essential insights and resources for guiding their teens through this exciting time.

Scheduled for May 14, 2024, this online event aims to address common substance use issues that teenagers may encounter during prom night festivities. From high-risk drinking to impaired driving, the webinar will oVer practical tips and expert guidance to foster meaningful conversations within families, ultimately promoting safer celebrations.

According to recent statistics, just over half of teens engage in high-risk drinking — defined as consuming four or more drinks — on prom night. This alarming figure is two and a half times higher than the national average for similar behaviour at other times of the year.

Such excessive alcohol consumption not only poses immediate dangers like alcohol poisoning and impaired judgment but also contributes to the persistent issue of impaired driving, which remains the leading criminal cause of death for Canadian teens.

“We understand the significance of prom and graduation season in the lives of teenagers,” says Chantal Vallerand, Executive Director at Drug Free Kids Canada.

“Our goal is to empower parents and guardians with the knowledge and tools they need to support their teens in making responsible choices and creating lasting memories for all the right reasons.”

A Prom to Remember will delve into strategies for initiating open and constructive discussions with teens about substance use, setting boundaries, and fostering a safe and supportive environment.

Participants will have access to valuable resources and expert advice, equipping them to navigate prom night with confidence and peace of mind.

Registration for this free webinar is now open on the Drug Free Kids Canada website .

Don’t miss this opportunity to join the conversation and ensure a prom to remember — for all the right reasons.
